One firm belief I hold at the fore whenever I start a new writing project is that the music
must be fun to listen to, and it must be fun to play. At the same time, it must continue to
challenge players and audiences.
saxophone quartet (SATB)
Smudge was written for Quirk Saxophone Quartet and their performance at the World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia. As in much of my work, the relentless groove and hooks are present almost all the way through this work, giving way briefly to a calmer middle section that is dominated by a soprano melody. The use of extended techniques throughout should always be a positive addition to the textures created.
duet for any sax
BONK! is a duet that features an ever developing groove built up between the 2 performers. It’s staggered opening evolves into a driving and pulsating mix of rich bass and floating lyrical sounds that highlight the range of the instrument.
The piece can be performed as a duet of equal instruments or mix and match the Bb and Eb versions. Please note this version will not work with the bass clarinet or baritone sax versions.
